What a first-page ranking is actually worth to a services business

Ranking is a means, not an outcome. For a services business the number that matters is not position — it is how many of the people who land actually need what you sell.

A first-page ranking for a broad term can send a great deal of traffic and almost no work. A third-page ranking for a narrow, specific term can quietly carry a whole quarter. Both are true at the same time, which is why ranking reports alone tell you very little.

Three numbers worth more than position

  • What share of visitors on that term ever contact you
  • What those enquiries are typically worth once they close
  • How long the term took to move, and whether it is holding

The narrow-term case

Terms that name a specific problem convert several times better than terms that name a category, because someone typing a specific problem has already decided they have one. They are also far cheaper to rank for. That combination is usually where a services business should start, and it is almost always where the reporting is weakest.

Before you commission any SEO work

  • Agree what an enquiry is worth, in writing, first
  • Ask which terms will be targeted and why those ones
  • Insist that reporting shows enquiries, not just positions
